Dear Foursquare,

Dear Foursquare,

I’ve been seeing someone else. I know. I know. We had such a good run together. But it’s just not working out anymore. You’re just… how do I say this politely? Unstable. I want to go places and you take forever to get ready. Your locations load like black strap molasses and frequently they’re just plain wrong.

You even forget where I am. How rude is that? I fly to New York and you think I’m still in Detroit. What kind of relationship is that? I ask so little of you and you just can’t deliver on your meager promises.

So I”ve found someone new. We’ve glanced at each other for years but it was always from afar. Yes, I know, stop your crying. It’s just that Gowalla takes care of me. Even has better icons and more to do. And Gowalla knows where I am and rewards me. I’ve given you over 1,000 checkins chances. It’s time to let go.

Foursquare, sweetheart… you’re just not fun anymore. No, I mean fun like it used to be. Dave was talking to me about Gowalla a little while ago and I decided to give it another look. And, man, he was right. Gowalla is solidly put together, has some really nice looking badges and pins, and just… um… er… keeps itself put together well. It’s hard to get excited and engaged when a service lets itself go. And I think we both know that it’s been happening more often with you. No, no… I’ll still check-in with you wherever I’m going. But… don’t get upset… it’ll be through Gowalla’s interface.

I’m sorry to hear that you and FourSquare are splitting up Dave. We had a chat, and FourSquare wanted me to tell you that maybe you should consider getting back together when Empire Avenue integrates it into their share price calculations.

P.S. If you haven’t heard about Empire Avenue, I think you should definitely check it out. It’s the social media stock market.

“Remember, no matter how pretty the interface is, someone somewhere is tired of putting up with…”

As someone who’s dated both Gowalla and Foursquare on and off for a couple of years, I can safely say Gowalla isn’t a whole lot better. Its location database is a fraction of Foursquare’s. Adding a new venue is a complete pain. Granted, it is pretty and it seems to get along better with Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare of all people.

There still isn’t a killer app in the geolocation. This category is just getting started.

Per usual, you’re correct, Charlie. One thing I am happy about (with Gowalla) is not seeing six copies of a location added by people who have the time to add a location, but are too lazy to search for it. Or worse, misspell it.
